Softgels vs Capsules: Which Format Is Right for Your Supplement?

They look similar on the shelf, but softgels and two-piece capsules are manufactured differently, suit different actives, and carry different costs. A side-by-side comparison.

Softgels vs Capsules: Which Format Is Right for Your Supplement?

Softgels and capsules both deliver a dose in a swallowable shell, and on the shelf they can look almost identical. But they're different formats, made on different equipment, suited to different ingredients — and the choice shapes your cost, your claims, and your consumer experience.

The quick distinction

  • Softgel: a one-piece, hermetically-sealed shell filled with a liquid (oil, suspension, paste). The shell is formed, filled, and sealed in a single operation.
  • Capsule (two-piece hard shell): a pre-made gelatin or vegetarian shell into which a powder, pellet, or liquid is filled and closed.

When to choose a softgel

Softgels win when your active is:

  • An oil or lipid (omega-3, vitamin D, evening primrose) — liquids are softgels' native fill.
  • Oxidation-sensitive — the sealed shell protects the fill from air.
  • Low dose with bad taste — the shell masks odor and flavor completely.

Softgels also carry a premium consumer perception: they read as "advanced" and "easy to swallow."

Trade-offs: higher tooling cost, more complex manufacturing (gel mass prep, drying tunnels), and higher MOQ than capsules.

When to choose a capsule

Capsules win when your active is:

  • A powder or blend (probiotics, botanical extracts, amino acids) — powders are capsules' native fill.
  • Sensitive to the heat of softgel production — capsules fill at room temperature.
  • Needed in a high dose — powders pack more actives per unit than oils.

Capsules also offer vegetarian (HPMC) shells more readily, which matters for clean-label and plant-based positioning.

Trade-offs: less premium perception than softgels, can't hold oils without a secondary inner fill, and powders can have taste/burp issues if the shell breaks down.

How to decide

Two questions:

  1. What physical form is your active? Liquid/oil — softgel. Powder — capsule.
  2. What's your positioning? Premium/beauty/lipid — softgel. Clean-label/powder/probiotic — capsule.

If you're unsure, bring your active and your target claim to a manufacturer — they'll recommend the format that delivers your dose, protects your ingredient, and fits your shelf strategy.

The format decision is reversible only at real cost (new tooling, new stability work). Get it right at the start.
